DCI-10 Creative Ideation 2 – Module Overview
In the previous eModule DCI-09 we introduced the basic elements of creative idea generation. In this module we build on this with a look at SCAMMPERR and the Idea Box.
SCAMMPERR is a tool initially developed by Bob Eberle (SCAMPER) and was based on the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving questioning processes. We like using it in two areas of our process. Here was use it to generate new, more, or different ideas as part of the Ideation stage, and later we will see how it can also be used to help build, develop or design ideas into potential solutions.
The Idea Box again is a tool based on the early work of a number of people, but our version follows the process outlined by Michael Michalko in his book ThinkerToys which we highly recommend. The Idea Box is a very effective and creative tool for ‘inventive thinking’ and we have used it to develop new frozen food products, confectionery, team building activities, conference packages and much more. Entrepreneurs in particular like using this tool.

Exercises – Ideation using a couple of new tools
The worksheets area has both SCAMMPERR and Idea Box templates for use in this module.
Use SCAMMPERR to extend an existing product, service or strategy you currently have, do or are aware of. To find a focus look around at what you do or see – for example, we see Shopping Centres every day of very many types. Examine you local shopping centre and use SCAMMPERR to come up with as many new ideas as you can to make shopping more pleasurable, easy, fun, or just better.
Look at your own business, is there a strategy or service you now use/offer that might be done more innovatively. Use SCAMMPERR to generate ideas on how to do that.
Use the Idea Box to develop several new product or service ideas – aim for 3-5 fairly well developed ideas. If you like start with the suggested focus of developing a new children’s toy. This will help you get use to the technique. But then try the Idea Box to develop a product, service or strategy in your own field or area of interest please do so. Take your time developing the box and don’t make it too big – six parameters (plus the FLIP) and no more than 10 options gives you 10s of thousands possible links.
